Ransomware

Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) that encrypts a victim’s files or locks them out of their system, demanding a ransom payment to restore access. Cybercriminals often spread ransomware through phishing emails, malicious downloads, or exploiting security vulnerabilities. Once infected, victims are typically presented with a ransom note demanding payment—often in cryptocurrency—to decrypt their files or unlock their system.

One common use case for ransomware attacks is targeting businesses and cloud storage where attackers encrypt critical company data, disrupting operations and demanding payment for data recovery. Without proper backups and cybersecurity measures, victims may face permanent data loss or financial losses from paying the ransom.

Key Prevention Measures:

  • Regular Backups – Store data securely in offline or cloud backups to recover without paying a ransom.
  • Use Security Software – Install antivirus and anti-malware tools to detect threats.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) – Adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access.
  • Avoid Suspicious Links & Attachments – Do not open emails or downloads from unknown sources.
